Initial consultation
It is important that I am able to gather as much information as possible about your child. We will therefore complete a case history together, talking about your current concerns, your child's birth and medical history as well as any additional contributing factors which may be related to your child's difficulties.
How long will it take?
Usually this will take around 60 minutes.
What can I expect?
The first session will be to carry out assessment and diagnose any presenting difficulties. This may be through standardised assessment, informally through observation, discussion and play, or a mixture of both.
It may also be necessary that a second session is needed to continue and complete assessment.
What happens at the end of the first session?
This will vary from child to child.
It may be necessary to arrange a block of therapy session, perhaps weekly or fortnightly to carry out direct 1:1 therapy with your child. As a parent or caregiver, you may also request informal training so that you can better understand and support your child at home. Activities can be suggested for time together with your child in between therapy sessions.
Alternatively, assessment may outline that there is no need for speech and language intervention, in which case I will help to signpost you to other agencies, including other health and/or educational professionals, if appropriate.
Am I expected to carry out speech and language therapy at home?
Regular practice and intervention has been proven effective for positive change but this is not always possible in families for different reasons.
Alternatively, you may prefer to read through websites such as those outlined under 'useful links' at your own leisure.
